The text was born in a historical moment marked by a crisis of the funeral ritual. The collective act of saying goodbye to a loved one is often reduced to a brief formality, or, as during the Covid-19 pandemic, completely absent. Drawing inspiration from ceremonial books for the liturgy of the dead, from ritual offerings of Proto-Dynastic Mesopotamia, from the vertigo of video game checklists, from rhetoric contests, and from the pranks of two old friends, Ufficio teatraleprovides actors and the audience with a handbook to perform a funeral rite on stage—simultaneously entirely fake and entirely real, entirely serious and entirely ironic—transforming the theatre into a space for confronting death.

Il testo nasce in un momento storico di crisi del rito funebre. L’atto collettivo di dire addio a una persona amata è spesso ridotto a una rapida formalità, se non, come durante la pandemia di Covid-19, completamente assente. Traendo ispirazione dai libri cerimoniali per la liturgia dei defunti, dalle offerte rituali della Mesopotamia protodinastica, dalla vertigine della lista videoludica, dalle gare di retorica, dagli scherzi di due vecchi amici, Ufficio teatrale consegna agli attori e al pubblico un prontuario per svolgere sul palcoscenico un rito funebre, del tutto finto e del tutto vero, del tutto serio e del tutto ironico, che trasforma il teatro in un luogo di confronto con la morte.
